Neel,
Thanks for the clarification. I was trying to imagine glass mat and epoxy as a faring tool.

Re: Neel's Palm Beach 22 build
I spent parts of the last three days dry fitting/scarfing the bottom battens. The problem has been the high temperatures in the 90's every day. I am only good for about one hour at a time in the garage, then inside to cool off. I know you Texas guys are going to chuckle at this and don't want to hear me whine about the heat..... Anyway everything fits and is ready for encapsulation. I should have them all glued in by the weekend.

Don't worry Neel, hot is hot regardless if you're in Texas or cooler parts of the country. I'm good for about an hour as well, then it's into the air conditioned house. Man, how did they ever do any thing without AC back in the 1800s !!neel thompson wrote: I know you Texas guys are going to chuckle at this and don't want to hear me whine about the heat....

Looking Great!
Neel - Do you epoxy all the batten joints or use a PVA wood glue (e.g Titetbond 3)? If you epoxy do you thicken it?
Nice to see another proud Festool sander owner

Re: Neel's Palm Beach 22 build
Thanks everybody...… Still very hot here and it's slowing me down a little. I'm not complaining though. I got the first of three coats of epoxy on the bottom battens this morning. Two to go
Jim... First, let me tell you how much I love my six inch Festool sander. That along with their vacuum really helps to keep the mahogany sawdust out of the house which, in turn, keeps bitching to a minimum.... If you know what I mean. I don't use wood glue anywhere on the boat. It would probably hold up, but I don't want to take any chances. The way I do it is to first coat the pieces with unthickend epoxy (two coats). Then when I am ready to attach, I give the piece to be glued one more coat and both gluing joints a coat with unthickened epoxy and then thicken it and apply that to one of the surface to be glued. Then lightly clamp or use screws to hold it in place. I use West System products and they have not let me down yet....When I built my Gentry, after I flipped it, I got inside and cleaned up all the epoxy joints and drips and then coated the entire inside of the hull again with epoxy resin (unthickened). It is definitely encapsulated !!

Re: Neel's Palm Beach 22 build
I have been encapsulating and have glued in the starboard side bottom battens. The port side pieces are ready to be installed so I will start that tomorrow. It has taken a lot of time for the encapsulation as I did three sides with three coats. That was not very enjoyable. After all bottom battens are on, I will begin fairing the entire bottom from the keel out to the chine. After that I will tackle the port and starboard side battens.
