That picture, with it sitting on the grass, the transom knees are forward, correct?
transom knees are forward?
transom knees are forward?
Oak is over rated, everything about it takes extra time; then it warps, splits or checks !!!

Re: Neel's Palm Beach 22 build
Hi Ken, in the photo on the grass, the lower part of the knee "L" points forward. The top curved member curves aft. The way you see it in the photo, you are standing on the starboard side looking to port.

neel thompson wrote:... As far as strength of the transom goes, the side to side battens are almost 3/4" thick material, laminated in three 1/4" pieces. Also the keel, stringers, and the bottom battens do attach to the bottom transom side to side batten which will make it very strong, I think. The method you suggested would also work and probably would have been a lot less complicated.
One thing I've come to appreciate in studying boat designs is that when one stumbles on something that looks unusual or out of the norm, the designer usually had a reason for it. Curious to know the why behind this one. Neel, you are doing some great work and it's really fun to follow. Much like Roberta's Torpedo project, your boat will be a benchmark and great reference for others to study.

Re: Neel's Palm Beach 22 build
Thanks Peter..... This morning I shaped the port side piece somewhat on the sanding station and glued everything up. So no more clamps!! After everything sets up I will fine tune the sanding all the way around before moving on to the battens. I took a picture of my "weapon of choice" for attacking the twisted and curved side pieces. When I get it close to correct I will switch to the RO sander to finish it off. I have used the angle grinder with the 36 grit disc before and it really gets rid of stuff in a hurry. Should be fun !! Can't wait.

Re: Neel's Palm Beach 22 build
After about an hour of heavy duty sanding/shaping with "weapon of choice" and RO sander, I ended up with the almost finished transom. Some fine tuning and battens to go. Happy Thanksgiving everyone.... Neel

Re: Neel's Palm Beach 22 build
I started working on the transom battens. Each will be two laminations of 5/16" thick by 2" wide for a total thickness of 5/8". I glued the two laminations of the bottom batten while maintaining the radius so they should stay close to that after it sets up. I will do the same for the middle batten laminations. I apologize for the picture quality.

Thanks Jenko
I have fitted and glued the bottom batten on. The middle batten has been roughly fitted. After the glue sets up, I will make sure the bottom batten is faired in all directions to the top and sides of the transom. Then I will finish fitting the middle batten and glue it on. After that sets up, final fairing will be done.

Neel
Looks Good. I'm starting to understand. That is easier build than to draw.

Neel, love those curves. This is going to be quite distinctive. Looking great so far.

Thanks Matt, Bill, and Carl
I faired the bottom batten with the rest of the transom assembly and glued in the middle batten. Tomorrow I will get the whole thing faired and a couple areas touched up with thickened epoxy. Then final finish sanding and it will be ready to encapsulate. Thanks to everyone for hanging in there on this transom thing. There was a lot more to it than I originally thought... Neel

Re: Neel's Palm Beach 22 build
I have faired everything so it's ready for encapsulation. I just ordered mahogany for four of the frames. I should be able to get them finished before we head to Florida in January. This milestone should make everyone happy... After today, no more transom pictures !!
