Neel,
I been building a strip canoe for awhile now, and I was steam bending many pieces.
The designer was telling me you dont need the steam, just the heat, he says he only uses a heat gun to bend parts.
I tried it, and he is right. I bought a decent heat gun for the task, and then put away all the steam, water, hoses, bags, containers, wrappings, and etc.

That's convenient to know, Ken. Is the wood dry when you apply the heat gun, or do you soak it first?

dry wood,,,, it works. although on a tough piece it may take on a toasty look......

Yes I liked that steam bag approach as well. It worked well me when getting my chines into position.

Neel, making very quick progress here. Looking great!

Neel-
nice to see the stem assembly getting tied into the frames. Sure is a sleek looking hull :D

Thanks Carl and Billy. I had a slight setback yesterday with the sheer. After steaming, clamping, and letting it cool, it looked horrible. The problem is that it not only has to bend, but also twist and other things. So I started over... This time without steam. I ripped a 14' x 2 1/2 x 9/16 in half back to about eight feet from the aft end. Then I glued and used ratchet straps to pull the first half-piece into place. After the glue set up, I pulled the second half in and glued/clamped it. This should work. I liked the steaming process, but will not be using it for compound bends. I should be able to use most of the board I screwed up somewhere....

Neel

That bend and twist is a real PITA! I faced that eight places on the Bartender.

You took the words right out of my mouth Bill.... Looking back at the pictures, I don't think I have two clamps that are the same... Carl puts me to shame in the clamp department !! Also, I don't measure between clamps for uniformity as he does. I wish he would come to a Gathering.... We need to meet him !!

I only have a lot of clamps because I bought a few at a time from harbor freight. At 4 dollars a piece its not too hard.

I would like to come to the Gathering but need to handle some other issues in my life right now and try and get the boat done at the same time. Just can't afford all the hits on my wallet and fit in a lengthy trip. Please forgive me, I am not trying to be anti-social. :D :D

You're forgiven Carl. You will get there someday, I'm sure.

Carl might be a little OCD with his clamps. But hey, if it works?!

I really enjoy reading and looking at pictures of his build. He really thinks ahead and plans everything out. He says he doesn't, but I would bet he measures between those clamps. He's gotta !!

I have made some progress on the sheer. I got the starboard sheer guled on from stem to transom, and I have the first ripped piece of the port sheer fitted and ready to be glued to the frames.

After alot of coaxing with clamps and ratchet straps, the sheer is attached all the way around. I have two of the three laminations of the chine on and the third and final one will be going on in the next day or two. She is starting to take shape !! I ordered the mahogany for the battens yesterday and should have it next week.
