MalahinI transom knee height

Post by footer »

On the plans it says to cut the transom knee height based on your engine. So, im not ure what measurement I should go by. Im putting a mercury 60 HP, 4 stroke, EFI, with electric trim, and a 20" shaft.
What are your recommendations of how far down to cut the transom?
Also, I've seen some different steering consoles, but not sure what I may need. Any recommendations of what type and where to look?

I’d go about 21” for a 20” shaft motor. I like to have plenty of transom so can mount the motor with the cavitation plate even with bottom of the boat.
You can always cut it down if needed but never put it back on.

The full size pattern for the Malahini knee is well short of the height needed for a long shaft motor. I went to my friends boat dealership and took quite a few measurements on the bolt hole patterns to make sure my knee would have adequate height. I had to add at least 3 inches to make sure the bottom bolt holes(that is the bolt holes closest to the keel) would come in beneath the 2x4 transom cross brace. The transom height on similar boats at the dealership was 21 inches.
