I agree with Lowka, you should beable to find another sb chevy without too much problem. You can swap the marine parts over, also, you still have all the other hardware and driveline from the donor.

Picked up my new V8 long block today :D

I thought it would be better to splash out on this than trying to rebuild the other one with a second hand block.
There is something about picking up a new engine that just puts a smile on your face.

The planking on the hull is finished now for a few weeks of sanding to get it as smooth as possible. I only used the mahogany up to what I think will be the water line as bellow that will be painted and mahogany aint cheep :D looks like I have to do a bit of a clean up too, I have also started building a mockup of the hull to set the engine on and find the shaft angle that will be the fun part.

Looks like you are definitely making a lot of progress. So when are you going to show us that new engine you bought? Are you keeping the Malahini?

Starting to take a bit of shape now. :D

So I started work on a mockup of the hull to find out will the engine and gearbox fit :? and what angle to drill the shaft hole
Image

Can someone tell me if this picture has a gearbox on it as it looks very like mine and not a direct drive. :?

What kind of cooling sytem are you going to run?(raw water or closed loop) The water pump in the pic looks like one you would use in a car (ie closed loop cooling) If your going raw water I'm not sure that type of water pump will work for you.

My understanding is that the cracker box is supposed to be direct drive BUT that line drawing appears to show what looks like a velvet drive tranny on the back end of the motor.

Hi Nova ss I am going to run it on raw water with a jabsco pump and the circulation pump as it was setup in the correctcraft , I was going to use a crossover pipe and not use the circulation pump but after an internet search it seemed that the back two cylinders will run a bit hotter without the pump so as I don't know these engines I thought it would be better to be safe than sorry.

The lines drawings are a generic drawing. they do not show installation of any particular engine. The designer cannot know if the builder would install a Ford, Chevy, Chrysler, or any other engine. So, the drawings are generic in nature. There should be a Center of buoyancy on the drawing, you adhere to that with your own engine.

thats interesting info, I didnt know you could run both pumps in one system. BTW I dont believe that fergal was wondering which brand of motor was in the pic I believe he was wondering if the pic was showing a gearbox in it.

The picture is a generic sketch. It is stated in the picture as roughly a 350 ci engine w/"direct drive". You should be able to use the tranny and maintain the design CB if you make the hull at the +10% allowance.
If you stay with the 15' std. length the CB will be 10" too far forward.

Hi jt, How are you getting with your build.
I know the sketch is generic it's just that it looks more like an engine with a gearbox than a direct drive off the flywheel or harmonic balancer.
My boat is std 15' with a few inches added because of the barrel back that should give me back another inch or two also the weight of the gearbox should bring the CB back in line a bit. I am trying to keep the CB at 82" to 84" from the transom using the seesaw effect.
If I did build it 10% bigger would the CB also be moved by the weight of the gearbox:?
I'm not the mathematical type  so I guess the one way for me to find out if this will work is good old trial and error, error, error :D
Watch this space.
