I used a 1984 merc 90 inline six. It worked out great. With 3 200 lb people in the boat the speedo reads about 37mph but my buddy and i both agreed we were going closer to 40 to 45mph. from a dead stop it jumps out of the water.

Well, over the winter I built a frankenstein motor out of about four different old mercs, with the powerhead coming from a 1962 Merc 850 (76 cu. in). I used the sunset orange and sand tan paint scheme from the old Mark 55. It looks pretty good. The 850 was rated at 85 HP but by today's standards would be equivalent to about 72 HP. I paired it up with a 13 x 17 aluminum prop. I reached 34 mph today. I'm satisfied with that, but I do plan to try a 19 pitch prop and see what that does.
