I'm totally re-doing my Tuffy inside and out and was thinking about some spray rails as we get pretty wet on choppy days on the water or when the hull stuffs easily into larger waves.

Anyone have any good ideas on the contoured shape and material that should be used for these? I was thinking aluminum with a rubber backing screwed onto the chine line or just above it. Then I was thinking just rubber that could double as a bumper rail. Or would wood be the best material to work with?

Solid vinyl works well. The easiest approach is to have the bottom of the rail flat and perdendicular to the sides, flush with the chine.

It may not be the "best" but on my Cabin Skiff I used 2" aluminum angle bedded on 4200 and bolted it to the hull. Mine is not directly on the chine but a few inches up. On the chine would probably be better but thru bolting was a problem because it was added after the build - couldn't access the area below the sole. Even so it still works well.

I have a Tuffy to. Same issue. Not sure what to do? Anyone use the Tasco or Smart Rail's?

I was watching a video on Youtube on East Cape Skiffs and one had custom made spray rails out of glass fiber. They were a 2-stage spray rail, like others said on here, just above the chine line.

For my choice since I'm redoing the exterior as well as the interior I think mahogany strips would be the best. You could lay glass over top and integrate it into the colours of the hull. And best of all you could shape them as you wish. A few sets of countersunk brass or stainless screws and some epoxy glue on the back and your set.
