Since my first inspiration came from this site to get into boat building it has given me confidence and the tools to understanding what plywood does when you twist it, bend it and (contort it.)
Having built first a little 8' minimost then the TNT then another modified Minimax I wanted to build a canoe or kayak. After going to the local Bass Pro Shop and looking at the Old Town Tandum I decided to make one simmilar ,taking a few measurments, I began.
First a pb. and cardboard 1/4 hull mock up.

It is one thing to use cardboard but when transfering that to 1/4'' ply. is a different story. When laying up the 2 strips on the sides I learned that they cant be forced into position they need to (flow into place) otherwise the hull would be distorted with the frame removed. Any way I got it done and made up 1/4'' templates of 1/4 of the hull.

Looks good Steve.

I think most of the kayak kits/plans (or least some of them ) use thinner marine plywood like 4MM....That probably bend/contort easier, and make a lighter hull.

I bought some as the Tunnel-mite calls for it on the deck

Thats really cool! Going on your own is what makes all these boats stand out too. Be carefull though, folks may offer to pay you to build one for them and of course think that they can get one cheaper than the ones at wallyworld. These types of projects really do allow us all to learn about working with wood and the scantlings that is required for certain applications.

Well got the inside glassed then coated it with some old Pittsburgh epoxy I have had since 1993. The pigment part was quite thick but the second part is clear and it mixed well and still worked.

I am sitting here looking at your work. My pastor and I had lunch together yesterday. He wants to build two canoe bookcases. You have given me an idea.

BTW - great work

More progress.

Now I am working on the seats. This is what I have come up with so far. I do have a 3/4'' thick sheet of closed cell foam I might use also.
The slats are the same as the on the hull 1/4''X3/4'' ,to try and give the seat flex. I will put slats on the back also.
But as it is it still feels hard on my tail bone where the seat bottom begins to curve back up at the back.
Any ideas??

Love the way you matched your strips. Looking really good.

On your seat. Are you going to put strips down the whole back or only where the plank is?

I am just amazed at the quality and skill displayed here. All I'm trying to do is build by the plans and here you have done your own thing and it is just great looking. thanks for sharing this with us.

Dave thanks. On the seat back I was only going to strip where the ply. plank is.

Dang Steve - I just noticed where you are from. I was in KC yesterday. I am up there about once per week visiting a satellite office.

You mentioned the seat being hard on the tail bone. Have you tried just using some form of mesh or fabric for the back to see if that flexibility will relieve the pressure points on the seat?

I had this same issue on my kayak. I found that if my back was too straight or hard that the seat became uncomfortable. I removed the hard back and went soft and that corrected the hard seat. I believe it was more because I changed my angle of sitting on the seat. Perhaps you should loosen those straps and adjust the back until the seat feels right.
