Questions about modifying a design

I am wanting to know if the frame members can be done with glue laminated member saving frame size? I am contemplating making the two front frame members where the v-berth would be in glue laminations instead of just cut from lumber. The only reason I would consider it is for being able to size down the framing member so as to conserve berth space due to the member being able to be dimensionally smaller yet still retaining the original frame members strength. In other words would a glue lam of 1/4" thick strips to make a member 1-1/2" thick by 3" wide be as strong as a 1" thick by 6" lumber framing member? (Engineers input welcome here) Since the practical gain in berth width would only be 3" to 6", this extra work and effort may not be worthwhile. Secondly the frame members in the bow would be under the greatest stress relative to the remaining frame members in my mind so should I trash this idea before I pursue it or is there any merit to potential benefits?
