Hi all,

just came on board because I bought the squirt plans with a jet drive in mind. I have a Kawasaki 550 that I'm hoping to buy. Is this an easy engine to work on? It doesn't run properly now "drawing false air" (bad dutch translation).. I was also wondering about the noise. Do you insulate the engine bay? Does the 550 have a reverse bucket?

many questions. Haven't even started yet :)

I'll read all threads on Squirts with this engine and go from there...

I used a 550 in my Squirt. I lengthened the hull to 11ft in order to give enough room for the stock driveshaft. The pump is mounted under a mock swim platform for appearance. I did not have a jetski hull for the bottom, so I fabricated it myself with 3/4" oak and 3/4" plywood partial bulkhead to accommodate the shaft mount. The measurements for the shaft and pump positioning are critical. It had no reverse; but I wa able to obtain a reverse gate from a side by side Kawasaki and fabricated mounting brackets with aluminum angle. I did not worry about the noise. I have a removable hatch over the engine compartment. There are some pics of my build and some others in the gallery. Here are a couple of pictures

I went a little overboard on the stringers, mounts and flooring, which added aome additional weight. I'm happy with the results and get approximately 30 mph.

I saw the pictures allready, looks really good. About the weight; I built another boat and somehow always add more stringers and seal the entire hull with epoxy. Would it be easy to create watertight compartments? I like the idea of an unsinkable boat. (yeah yeah, the Titanic was also considered unsinkable)... I have A Fiskars Buster aluminium boat that can keep afloat with four persons regardless of the amount of water in it..... The other small boat I built has five closed compartments and a small cockpit so also floats...

WOOD FLOATS. :D You just need some floatation for the 300lb outboard.
