Hello Everyone from Nebraska. Im only 19 and currently in south dakota doing an Ethanol Internship. I have been doing a lot of research on wood boat building. I currently own a 1950s runabout that i bought for 75 dollars. i got the boat, motor, and trailer. It had water in the bottom along with trash and many other items and also the motor was locked up. I pulled it home from 30 miles away and started cleaning it out and sanding the inside and outside. I ended up doing some minor fiberglass work to the inside hull and some body work to the outside. I then painted everything inside and out. Then carpeted the interior. I fixed the motor myself also. It was my first time for and outboard repair. Evinrude Lark Golden Jubilee, Big Twin 35hp. I found out the motor itself wasnt locked up but the lower unit itself was. I tore it all apart found the locked up bearing and purchased one for five dollars put it back together and mounted it. It started right up with a good carb cleaning. But anyway with the closed bow it makes it very hard to fish from. I have a 17.5 foot flat bottomed dory drawn up that im going to build with a center console. I am priceing all of the materials first.. I have a lot of carpentry experience. I took cabinetry class in highschool where i built an entertainment stand, a gun chest like a cedar chest that hold six guns and two drawers below for ammunition and other items. i also owned my own lawn service throughout middleschool and highschool (about 25 large yards a week, every week). I love building things especially with wood and also metal. as i can also Mig weld very well.

Any information or tips for my 17.5 foot dory boat build would be greatly appriciated. Thank you all for reading. Thanks for letting me be on the site.

Thanks again Jay.

Welcome Jay,

Sounds like you are the sort with the mindset to jump in and make things happen. You will do fine. A suggestion: buy the Boatbuilding with Plywood book from this site. Many questions you have will be answered right there.
