Hello all. I am new to your community but am eager to start building my boat. I am looking for something small and fast. So far I am trying to decide between a super spartan and a dillon racing mini vee. Any thoughts would be welcome. This will be the first boat that I have built which means it has to be fairly easy. I will not be using it for organized racing but i still want it to be fast and agile.

Do you have a link for this "dillon mini-vee" design? I couldn't find it in the catalog.

Dillon's comment about not being a naval architect makes me rather nervous. Hopefully someone with some experience with these boats can chime in.

Quote:
About the Plans: I am not a naval architect, or an engineer, or even a draftsman. I am a forester by education, a furniture-maker by profession, and a boat-builder, sailor and racer by inclination. I have built a number of boats over the last 40 years or so: from the 8-foot hydroplane I built when I was 14-years-old, to the 10-foot and 21-foot sailboats I built in the 1990s, and several more boats since then, including a bunch of tunnel and v-bottom raceboats.

oh. I thought it was a glen-l design.
Based on that, I'd recommend the spartan. Mainly because you'll have this forum with previous builders experience to get information/answers from. In fact Roberta (a veteran builder) is building a spartan right now. viewtopic.php?f=17&t=14165

Depending what size you want, one of these might be easier to build than a Super Spartan:

https://www.boatdesigns.com/8-9-XP8-mon ... ducts/377/

https://www.boatdesigns.com/9-Class-J-r ... ducts/315/

https://www.boatdesigns.com/10-6-Class- ... ducts/313/

https://www.boatdesigns.com/13-Class-CD ... ducts/314/

For a hydro, this design will be easier I believe:

https://www.boatdesigns.com/9-6-Picklef ... ducts/347/

I've seen the Dillon site....not sure how easy or complete their plans are....I know Glen-L's are proven for novice builders and we have build support here that know Glen-L's details& methods if not that particular design

If you decided on a Dillon and needed help, we would help as best we could, but it'd be a guess as they have different build methods

Your question is a little hard to answer without more information. When you say it has to be fairly easy that makes it hard to recommend a design, without knowing your back ground in woodworking. Also what tools and work space do you have. I believe any amateur woodworker can successful build most boats, however it you are new to woodworking then I would choose a design that says it is easy to build.
If you want a Vee boat, I would go with the Dillon Mini Vee, it is a proven race design that should handle rough water and turn very well. The Super Spartan maybe a little faster on smooth water but it will be slower in rough water and not turn as well as the Mini Vee.
If you our planing to just run smooth water then either boat should be OK. I think a better choice for a hydro would be Hal Kelly's WetBack or Jupiter they are both 10 foot hydro's, that were designed for APBA stock outboard racing in the late 50's & 60's. You can find the plans for Wetback and Jupiter at http://boatsport.org/kelly.html

I know there are more designs to consider but the main thing is to build a boat you like.
