Hi folks,

The name's Simon, nearing 40 with a desparate urge to start a new project. I've been mucking round with 30+yr old mercedes cars for the past 7yrs. It's been fun, met a lot of like minded DIY types and learnt a great deal, but it's taken a lot of time and money and has pretty much put on hold all the other hobbies and things one wants try before it's too late. Amongst that ever changing list is the desire to woodwork and build a boat or two. Building a wooden boat - what a great combo.

Anyhow, late last year out of the blue I went to buy my 13yr old son a canoe for his birthday. I baulked at the price of a plastic jobbie at a local camping shop. At around $1k I thought, pffft I can do one better and cheaper. I had thought about boatbuilding years ago but dismissed it when cars became a passion, but now was determined to revisit the idea. I bought plans for a Michael Storer Eureka canoe and working solidly on it, 10 days later we had a canoe in time for my son's birthday. The build was great fun. Years without woodworking, I forgot how addictive things like hand planing was. But the satisfaction of completeing a build and the desire for more has been overwhelming ever since.

To here now, after all the googling, reading and magazine buying over the past two months or so I'm hooked on the idea of a Zip or Malahini. Reading through blogs and threads etc, I've found it incredibly helpful seeing what others have achieved, particularly those that have completed what I reckon are masterpieces, even as newbies in a lot of cases. Also happy to see a bunch of Aussies here too. With ever changing laws I'm not quite clear on how to get a home made runabout registered but at least I know it can be done and the idea that Aussie Glen L GTG's may be on the horizon sounds exciting too.

Just have to clear the shed now, buy some plans and get cracking 8)

hehe, too right and well picked up. A colleague had grave doubts on my ability to build a canoe so when he asked if I really think I could, the response was a phonetic take on "canoath" followed by "I can!!". 8) We've struggled on naming the canoe but I think the appropriate name has been there under my nose all along.

Thanks for the welcome fellas and I think I'm heading down that track Lowka. We've done human powered, sail and powerboat to follow. Then I'll probably do full circle and do it all again  There's just so many designs and methods I'd like to try; clinker, cold mould and so on.

Anyway, little update, today I've ordered Malahini plans plus the beginner's ply boatbuilding library. Plenty to read and study up on before I get my hands dirty.
