Hi, I just joined this forum and I all ready have some questions to ask, but first I'll introduce myself. My name is John Fosdick and I live in Newark, DE I'm a retired shop teacher and EMS Helicopter Pilot. I have grown up around boats in Long Island, NY. Most of my adult life I have lived in Delaware and have owned many different boats. My students and I built a 18ft dory (1987) of "Dymanite Payton design. It was a stitch and glue construction and went together very well.

My wife bought me plans for the Ken Hankinson 18ft. Goliath Tugboat. I plan to start building this Spring. A number of years ago I inherited an Atomic 4 engine with a 2:1 reduction gear. Is this an appropriate engine to use in the Goliath? If so what size prop should I use?

I would appreciate a feedback.

Take Care,

John

Welcome. Sounds like you have a solid background. You will much company with the tug. There are a lot of tug builds in process right now. I am sure one of them will assist on the motor real soon

Welcome aboard John,
I'm glad to see another tug build about to start. :D I like this design, but I don't know if it has been built yet. You might be the first. What material do you plan for construction steel, aluminum or plywood? Good kuck and keep us posted. (we love pictures).

Thanks for the welcome's. I plan on using plywood for her construction. I have just finished reading the Glen-L Building Boats with Plywood Book (another Christmas gift). I would recommend it as a must read for anyone planning on building a boat using plywood. I am very excited to get started!

Take Care,

John

To answer your initial question partially, the Atomic 4 should be ok subject to the weight, which I can't see specified for the plan on the Glen-L site (might be on the plan itself). 30HP is right at the max but that is not issue. 2:1 gearbox would be just nice I think, not sure about prop size but a prop calculator should quickly answer that for you.

Best of luck and keep us posted.

Edit: This seems to be a good site fot the engine:
