Good morning. I have started on the console skiff boat and have a question about the motor well dimensions and motor size. I am told I need to pick a make and then figure if the dimensions are correct, however I am hoping to sell the boat without a motor and then build another..... Is the given motorwell size of 24" wide X 20 1/2" hilgh good enough to except a variety of motor choices? Thanks for any answers. Rich

The 20 1/2" high is probably the most common engine now in the power range of the boat. If somebody decided to go with a 15" short shaft, then they can cut down to that. Just make the well deep enough.

Width... maybe somebody else will jump in. Maybe PM Ray Mackie.

I built the splashwell on my Cabin Skiff as per plans but found the it is actually to narrow for most all modern drag link steering cable setups. I don't have the std setup on either of my boats so I can't give you a measurement. I know Dave Gerr's book -The Nature of Boats - suggest 33" wide. This is not a Skiff specific width. Any modern outboard with cable steering needs the same space. Maybe someone with a different boat will take the measurement and post. How about it guys!

The 20" transom height is OK as it is the most prevalent in outboards. It is referred to as "short shaft" and the less common "long shaft" is 25".
But I certainly would research the splashwell width more before committing. My resulting setup is less than optimal and been a constant annoyance.

I measured mine today and it is about 25". This is not wide enough and I would go with more. 32" or 33" is probably closer to what is needed.
