Hello everyone!

My name is Roman and the idea to build my own boat just literally crossed my mind few hours ago. Have not decided on any design yet, just contemplate something comparable in size/characteristics to 30-36 footers I am accustomed to sail out of the Boston harbor

Highly appreciate any suggestions as I literally have no clue where to begin, e.g. where to build a strong-back (I live in condo ) Or maybe I can rent a shed or something...dunno

A 30+ foot boat is a huge undertaking. Not saying you can't do it, just be aware of the commitment you're getting into.
Plus the fact that you'd have to rent space, you'd be renting a pretty large space to build a 30+ footer. Don't know what the monthly cost on that would be, but it's definitely something you'll have to figure into the overall cost, as it would likely take you a few years for the build.

Thanks! Few years are exactly in my plan - had to put sailing off for the time being until my twin toddlers grow old enough to sail with Dad Meanwhile wanted to keep myself busy with something sail-related like building a boat.

Re: renting a space - should I check with local marinas, does anybody have a clue??

I imagine it has to be a covered shed (given the weather in New England ) - not sure I've seen lot of those though...

Not sure marinas would be the right place to look. Never heard of one with public workshop space.
Maybe look into renting some warehouse or storage space?
You'll also probably want to find something heated, as epoxy+cold don't "mix". Otherwise the amount of available worktime will be limited by the weather.
You also have to consider moving/transportation once you complete the build. And don't forget to make sure the door is big enough to get it out once built!

Yep, arrived at the same conclusion - it better be something local to me. As far as transportation goes - haven't decided whether it's going to be one off gig or if I need to buy a tow trailer (I guess, it's too early for that kind of decisions )

Anyway, thanks for the hints.

Off to check rental storage listings - as this seems to be step #0 in my case. Hope to be back soon to discuss design options!

finding a place to build a large boat is a pain that is one of the reason my build is on hold Until I can locate the space I did what I could in the space I had I am looking into buying a house with a large garage or a big back yard so I can build a shop. I did find a large work space for about 200 a month but the funds wasn't right at the time

You might think about a smaller build space at first to build frames etc before setup....maybe less rent,and you can look for a bigger space while working and won't have to take first thing that comes along.

yep it works unless you have had my problems but a larger boat is do able, it does take more time for sure but your angles and curves are not as drastic and in some ways can make a build easier. I rack my brains more over the systems than the actual build of the hull or cabin area
