New member from Durham, NC

Postby 1960es » Wed Jan 25, 2017 8:27 am

I joined the forum recently and just trying to take it all in. Looks like a great place. I basically only know I want to build an outboard boat but thinking along the lines of the Zip. I have NO boat building experience but have built a couple of guitars and a teardrop trailer so looking forward to the challenge. I should be finishing up my second teardrop by summer so just thinking ahead. Always dangerous thinking about another project when you have not completed the one you have now!

I live in Durham, NC. My daughter is in college in Chattanooga so I am thinking I need to figure out a way to visit her near the time of the gathering to see some of the Glen-L boats in person.

Thanks,
Eddie

Welcome Eddie! You're a perfect fit for this group--someone who likes to build things. Keep in mind that most who build our boats have never built one before and many don't have woodworking skills, so you've got what it takes and then some! The Gathering would definitely be worth going to. Keep us posted on which boat you decide on...

Hi Neighbour,

Garfield here in Raleigh, NC. I built a ZIP a few years back so if you want to drop by my home for a look see you are most welcome. If you can build a teardrop trailer you can build a boat since you are used to working with things that are neither plumb nor square.

Eddie,

Welcome aboard! You should definitely come over for the Gathering in September, and hitch a ride with someone for the river run to Chattanooga on Friday. You'd be glad you did. It's a great experience.

What type of guitar did you build? If you can build a guitar, you can definitely build a boat! I'd say building a guitar is probably more demanding... especially building an arch top.

Thanks for the encouragement, everyone!

I attached a couple pics of the teardrop I built last summer. The new one is larger and basically just finished the trailer/floor at this point. Starting work on the walls so not really picture ready. I don't have a pic of the guitars handy but I built a Martin style acoustic and acoustic bass. Oh, and just finished a Hammered Dulcimer. Too bad I can't play it! (yet...hopefully). Anyway, I am feeling okay about taking on the project even though with everything I have built I have made mistakes but thankfully could either re-do that part or it was correctable. Cautiously optimistic you could say. :D

Garfield,

Even though I live in Durham, I work in Knightdale so I would definitely love to see your Zip. I will be in touch.

Thanks,
Eddie

Nice teardrop. I've been thinking about doing a small trailer.

Come to the Gathering! Keith McLean can give you tips on the dulcimer.

Awesome, welcome to the forum! A boat is definitely within your grasp. There is plenty of room for mistakes in boat building (ask me how I know) and you can recover from about anything.
