Hello from Halifax, Nova Scotia

Postby JimK » Wed May 03, 2017 1:09 pm

I am hopefully a few weeks away from convincing my wife we need a 2 year boat build project. The Malahini looks perfect, and there have certainly been some beautiful boats built by the members of this site. This forum is a great resource and has already answered most of my early questions. I have not ordered the plans yet though, and have a few for the Malahini builders:

How much space do I need? Is 10x20 feet of garage enough for the forms?
I'm already looking at lumber for the frames, but what are the maximum widths? Would 8 foot 1x8 suffice?

Thank you in advance for this forum
Jim

Jim:

I am building in one side of my two car garage. 10 X 20 might be a little tight, but doable. Frame material should be 2 X. I think I used 2X8. I'm at work now so I can't check.

I built a 16ft Malahini in a 10x20 space no problem. However, Malahini + trailer tongue + outboard barely fits in at an angle. My building form was on casters so I rolled it on to the driveway for lots of the work.
Go for it.

The build pictures really are worth a thousand words - just loaded with information for a first time builder.
I have found marine plywood and am leaning towards ash for my framing material.
Hope to start building soon, posting some pictures - and asking questions.

Thanks
Jim
