Engine recommendation for a 19' Barrelback

Postby GeneralB » Mon Aug 07, 2017 2:12 pm

Has anyone used a new Mercruiser 4.5L 250 HP with a direct drive? I have searched the web and cannot find any information on that configuration. It seems like this is a good engine for a replicate wooden boat. Any thoughts?

Other than the price tag, sounds like a great engine for a Barrelback.

Any V-6 would be awesome in a barrelback.
The 4.3L V6 fits nicely to all the other GM V8 type motor mounts, bellhousing, water pumps, etc.
Oak is over rated, everything about it takes extra time; then it warps, splits or checks !!!

That engine should be great. At 250 HP, the BB should be able to get close to 50 MPH. My 20' Tahoe does 38-39 MPH with a 115 HP diesel. By direct drive I assume you mean FNR with 1:1 ratio.

Thanks All for the quick response. I violated protocol by not introducing myself. Yes, I'm a retired AF General, but still working. I spent my career flying procatative aircraft like the SR-71 Blackbord and the U-2 Dragon Lady. I was an experimental test pilot at Edwards AFB CA. I got started with speed and loud noice racing hydros and utilities class boat in upstate NY when I was 15. I hope to start building the Barrel back soon.

GeneralB..... There was an 18' Glen-L Gentry built with a 4.3 V6 several years ago. The Builder was Jamie Zaroski from Canada. Here is a link to a short viedo of his boat at cruise speed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ERXIxwPc10

Welcome GeneralB!
There have been many discussions of engines for the Barrelback.
I just got my 4.3L 225 hp mercruiser and will be installing in my barrelback in the near future. I ended up getting the MPI system instead of the carburetor version.
Here's a link I posted earlier with my reasons for the v6.
