Inboard/Outboard range of motion.

Hello.

As a novice I am looking for an ib/ob leg that can lift up to a "horizontal" position. By this I mean a true horizontal not just close. (Not an outboard as there would be too much stress on the transom for the application in mind). This is to allow the boat to go onto a trailer with the prop much higher than normal. This is a new idea for an unusual application so I am trying to find out if there is a leg that will do this. I am not familiar with all the different models of inboard/outboard drives. I know that some have or did in the past have a gear and some have a drive shaft that allow movement. Would any of you know which out drive can get as close to horizontal when lifted up as possible. If not does anyone know how this could be achieved without too much modification. Even if the leg hydraulics lift it to its highest point and the rest is done manually that would be good too. This is just to swing the leg up high to get the prop and skeg a long way up for trailering.

Now all you have to do is find one !

Here's a link to a Canadian supplier that re-manufactures and rebuilds transmissions, transom assemblies, upper and lower gear cases and more :

    Stern Drive Connections (Orillia, Ontario, Canada)

      Scroll down to OMC STERN DRIVE - 400 SERIES & 800 SERIES MECHANICAL SHIFT. The Hi-Tillt/Lift model is not listed, but they may be able to supply one.
As an aside, they also supply performance marine transmissions :

Yes I see that these are quite old. I read a lot of material about them. I did see that there is a Canadian company that deals with some of these. Still, thanks it gives me some ideas.

I don't know anything about it, but I once saw an out-drive on a UK river cruiser, which rotated around the input driveshaft longitudinal axis, where it exits the transom; hinging upwards, sideways instead of rearwards as normally seen on other out-drives.

I don't know if I've explained that effectively - I'll see if I can find any pictures.

Thanks. That was something I was thinking about but was not successful at finding anything like it either. Thanks for the idea. I was trying to come up with something that won't be mechanically complicated and heavy. The OMC stringers mentioned by "hot rod" is probably the best starting point for me to study. Looking at outboards was a thought too but I was concerned about leaving the motor at a horizontal position if raised too much.

Thanks again Mr. Hot Rod. I appreciate all of your help. I think the OMC stringer idea is the best for me to settle on. I have found a "collector" of OMC bits and pieces near me. I recognize many of the parts from your leads to the "stringer" site, thanks again.

The lifting prop shaft "BOB" is also interesting.
