Speed2go from Alberta, Canada here.

Will be starting the build of a Cracker Box tomorrow. Would appreciate information on engine and transmission. Do not wish to go with direct drive.

Question: Can someone confirm that a Velvet Drive will fit and work in a 15', un-lengthened Cracker Box?

What engine will fit? Is a 350 Chev too large to work with the Velvet Drive?

Not sure if you checked out the Archives and the Galleries on the Glen L website. There are pictures there of Crackerbox builds with small block V8s and velvet drives. I see the plans say that you can increase the length by 10% by increasing the frame spacing. If you could do this I think it would be good to have the extra length as it would come in handy when working out the layout of the shaft and rudder, more room to work with. I see that many of the pictures show a rudder hung out from the transom with a cavitation plate over the rudder. This also adds to the overall length. It would appear that it can be done and has been done. If you search through the postings here and the information on the website you might find some contacts who have built the crackerbox before that you could ask about their builds. The books from Glen L on Building with Plywood and Inboard Engine Installations are good reference books to have.

Contact Fergal Butler. He can answer any question and a few you don't want to know. He got caught out in really bad conditions and his boat ended lost on the bottom. He's a great guy though.
