Hello from Barrie, ON

Postby shanew » Tue May 22, 2018 7:35 pm

I am in the beginning stages of planning and organizing what I need. I have bought the plans for the Malahini and am looking forward to building process soon. Was able to find reasonable priced bronze screws in Toronto. Next stage buying the lumber and wood.

Hello from Barrie :)

There is a few good sources for wood if you don't mind driving a little.

There is Noah's boatbuilding in Toronto (Etobicoke) - usually have everything you might want but they are not always the most economical - but they have "everything" including epoxy in just about every brand on the market, fabric, fasteners etc etc - worth the trip just to see everything in one place.

If you are willing to drive a little further there is a place called Monaghan's on the west side of Peterborough. It's all rough lumber but their prices are great (have white oak, African mahogany (khaya), sapelle and douglas fir) as well as just about any exotic you could want. They also sell marine plywood.

There is also a couple in the Ottawa area if neither of those have what you are after (Woodsource in Manotick and KJP right in Ottawa (Nepean)) but that is more than a bit of a drive from you.

Good luck on your build.

Yes, Plywood is "real" wood :)

A "professional" is someone who gets paid for their work - it doesn't necessarily mean they are good at it :)

Glen L is a great source for the correct silicon bronze screws, epoxies, fittings, and other accessories needed to build your boat. Search their online catalog for many items at good, competitive prices. Their fast shipping gets you the things you need without a long drive. Glen L sponsors this forum and it is important to support them and ensure this valuable source of information remains viable.

I agree Roberta but many products are not easy to get across the border, plus the exchange rate, duties and taxes.

And right now the Canadian dollar is sucking pretty bad.
