Hello Builders:

I've been a sailboat junkie for the past 37 years and it seems I have passed the illness onto my children. My 16 year old daughter announced last week that she intends to build a sailboard. I guess each generation has to do something a bit different than their parents. I've restored 4 pocket cruisers in my days and I'm working on my 5th right now.

Anyway I like the Glen-L Buckboard as a potential candidate for a sailboard. However I think it will need to have the rudder replaced with a fixed fin near the stern and the rig modified so the sailor can hold the boom instead of operating a main sheet line. I've made a drawing of my modification ideas and attached it here.

If you are so inclined, I'd love to hear anyone's thoughts on the pros and cons of this approach.

Fair winds,

You might check out the Glen-L 10. Even though it's little more like a "real" boat, it sort of follows the concept you've laid out.

Thanks for the tip.

I showed the Glen-L 10 to my daughter and she said... "I really want something I can stand on" And we already have a sun fish clone so the Glen-L10 would sort of be in competition with a boat we already have.

I'm not sure if it is against etiquette to talk about the competition's designs. We are also considering a set of plans by Phil Bolger called the Dynamite Sailboard. It looks similar to the Buckboard...., the Buckboard is 4' shorter but has a bit more beam and freeboard. So I'm thinking the wider beam will make it more stable = easier to handle. On the other hand, the beam might make it harder to steer by shifting your weight.

I don't have enough experience on this type of craft to really judge the trade-offs. The last time I was on a sailboard was about 25 years ago.

Other designs are welcome here also. I'd have to kick myself out if they weren't. This is a forum for builders. Just buy your supplies from Glen-L.
