I have decided to take on building the Glen-L 15, which should be a very fun project. While making a bill/list of items necessary for completion I came a cross the option of auxiliary power. I have decided that I do want to get a small outboard, in the case that a strong enough wind isn't present. However, when putting more thought into it, I have come up with a problem. There is already a rudder on the transom, so where would an outboard go? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!
Roger

Generally, a smaller outboard (and you really don't want a big one on a boat that small) can be mounted on one side of the transom, but it will, admittedly, get in the way some times. If you get a light enough unit, like an electric Torqueedo, it can be shipped when needed, and stored in the bilge when not being used.

Obviously, either course has difficulties, but you'll find that anything involved in boat design and operation is a compromise, and you'll just need to determine what you can live with, or live without. There really isn't one solid answer.

I have a Glen-L 15 with a motor mount to the starboard side. I use a 1.5hp 1968 johnson 2 cycle motor on it. It will push the boat well enough to get me back to wherever I came from in the case of no wind. It steers well with the rudder out or in. tracks much better with the center board down though!

I completed a Glen-l 15 last August. I chose a 5hp Tohatsu. Up to 7hp was recommended but 5 is more than adequate. I chose the 5 because it was as cheap as the 4 and included a external tank (3.5gal). The hull design speed is about 5.5mph. That means that is as fast as it will easily go. It will never plane. The hull being curved at the back prevents that. I find that I seldom use more than 1/4 throttle as any more results in more noise and pushing a lot of water and very little speed increase. The motor is capable of idling remarkably slowly and that is nice for docking. I got it online from a place in Tenessee and they were very good to deal with.
I built my mount out of white oak and it is permanently mounted so that the motor is out of the way when tilted up. I can send pictures if you send an E-mail address. I am at jeffmckie@gmail.com
