Santa Maria,, 15th century sailing

Dinghies, day sailers, world cruisers. Many small sailboats make ideal rowboats or low-speed power boats.

The Santa Maria made a port call to Brunswick, Ga. It only 45 minutes away so I made the tour.

I heard a news bit on it, and downed my coffee and drove off.

That big timber close to the floor, thats the tiller. Yep, a real tiller.
See the post looks like it going vertical, that a steering stick that goes up to next deck, they steer it from up there

yup, its an honest to God tiller

With the slip of a $20 bill, I got an extended tour, and a bit of conversation with a crew.
They got all the 15th century accurate details, and they got updated safety USCG requirements. They got auxiallary power, generator, forced air fans, GPS charts and so on. They got GPS autopilot, but, man-handle the tiller in close quarters, the autopilot is too slow at docking.

The steer stick on the midship deck. There is no wheel, just the stick.

And of course, the anchor. Gosh, I can't imagine man-handling that from its stowed position, much less put it back.
