I have been building a feather for some time now. I started when I was in college some 14 years ago. I am getting close to finishing it finally. I have had some years where it sat in the garage with nothing done to it because it was too hot, to cold or I did not feel like getting itchy fiberglass all over me. Some years I did minor work on it. My goal is to finally finish it this year. Today I picked up the mahogany for the daggerboard and rudder.
If it sails anything like a laser I will be thrilled.
If I was to start over again, I would choose a strip planked boat or a plywood boat. The feather sure looks good, but it has been much more work than I expected. The c-flex was not as easy to work with as I had expected and does not wet out as easy as mat or cloth. I had several dry pockets in the c-flex I had to grind out after I flipped the hull.
I filled the two side cavaties with 2-part foam, and filled the bottom 1/3 of the of the front with foam. I them laid a layer of fiberglass over the foam. I plan to have a nice compartment up front for gear without loosing too much floation. I have not decided if I will use deck hatches or if I will leave it open.
