Looking for my winter project, I've narrowed it to making outriggers and sails for my canoe or modifying my whitehall for sailing. I'm leaning towards the whitehall. I've looked on line and haven't found much info. Just a photo from Mystic Seaport and the "American Small Sailing Craft" referenced on this site. I have decent info on building leeboards. Now I'm turning to the experts....what say you???

Hi

Interesting topic!

I have been thinking about a Whitehall but would also like to be able to sail it.

Anyone out there have any experience? I'm not too optomistic as to windward sailing but should be OK if the point of sail is greater than a beam reach.

More info anyone?

Cheers

OK,

To get the ideas fermenting, check out this video. I think the addition of bilge keels and leeboards would give reasonable upwind performance with the balanced lug yawl rig.

Spark any interest??

Due to the underwhelming response, and the fact that I would probably mess up a great rowing boat, I have decided to scrap the sailing modifications. Instead I am making rope fenders. Here is my first attempt. Might even make a pudding for the bow. Add a little 'yar' to it.

Cool fender! If I tried that it would look like my tangled mess of christmas lights.

I say build a new boat for sailing. It sounds so quick and easy.

That's what we used to make on the Tow Boats for bumpers in the locks, much larger of course... hehehe As the barge contacts the lock wall, these bumpers roll right there in between the barge and lock wall. They werk great!

Really nice job on the rope fenders. I've seen places advertising those in Wooden Boat Mag and they are not cheap. As for the sail boat, I have wanted a sail boat for years, but just don't have a place to keep it unless it stays on a trailer. I have thought about the sail rig from Chesapeake Light Craft which turns the kayak into a trimaran. I bought my kayak from them as a kit and they have the sail rig as a kit or plans. They also have the sails and all the rigging.

Bergy, don't know how I missed your post/video before, but thanks!

As for me it looks a little tender.....you'd really have to be on your toes to keep that one upright, but it looks spritely!!

I've wanted to build a Whitehall/wineglass transom lapstrake type hull, but as much as I love sailing, I figured I'd just used it for pulling as it seems too tender for me!

I wouldn't want an engine either, but if I did, it'd have to be a small Seagull or antique Elto,Evinrude, or Johnson!!
