fore deck butt joint over strong back?

Dinghies, day sailers, world cruisers. Many small sailboats make ideal rowboats or low-speed power boats.

fore deck butt joint over strong back?

Post by Shelton » Sun Mar 24, 2019 1:08 pm

I'm ready to deck my Minuet 15 but I'm wondering about this information in the instruction sheets. The strong back at centerline fits over the breast hook and tapers so it's already a shade move elevated than the breast hook and sheer. With a butt joint I'm 1/4" above the other battens. That seems extreme to me. I'm not sure how it will mate with the sheer at the breast hook if that makes any sense at all.

I'm wondering if I should use 1/8 inch plywood for the back board of the butt joint instead of 1/4". I sure wish I could see a photo of what this should ideally look like.

Shouldn't it get faired back so it will take the 1/4" decking? I built the Glen-L 13 and I remember having to fair the strongback. Maybe I'm not understanding your question?
