Gentry launch in Colborne

Postby slug » Fri Jun 02, 2017 12:21 pm

Well, the weather finally got good enough for a sea trial today. Launched "Thumper" this morning at Bewdley on Rice Lake. Water levels in the Trent system are gradually getting lower, but still very high. All the ramps on Lake Ontario in our area are shut down due to high water .
Very happy with the boat. Extremely solid, turns nice at speed (25mph plus) but does put up some spray. Will wait for a while to decide on rails or not. Though I raised the waterline up 2 ", it is low at the bow.
I would (doing it again?) find some way to increase the cockpit length. It is to plan but too tight.

After doing some adjustments to the 351 Ford and getting her idling nicer, we took her out for a run. Everything worked perfect!
This thing is mind boggling out of the hole   :D :D :D ! I remember Dean talking about his when the four barrels kick in and it is certainly a Holy S..t thrill. Love it! Cruises nice at 25 to 30 mph and actually had her up to 45+ at around 4200 rpm. Sure she will do 50, but not really that comfortable....things happen too fast. It is after all a small boat!
No good pics of her cruising as we were alone without chase boat. But here's a couple . My friend and engine builder was with us with his wife as well as my wife Verna. ( She loves it!)

Doug

Congrats! My sure you have "That Grin!". The cockpit room is why I always recommend the stretch. People are just bigger now than when these boats were designed. But, Great Job! All of the mahoganies seem to run bow heavy at low speed.

Thanks guys (and gals ). I'm sure Roberta will tell about the pride we feel when people ask you where you got the gorgeous boat and you can tell them we built her ourselves. Feels great! :D :D

Congratulations Doug on the launch. I've had the honor of attending one of these so far, so I have a fair idea of how you must feel. Looks really nice in the water. And best of all, in time for almost the entire boating season!

That's a really sharp looking craft you have there! Enjoy!
