Thanks for the comments folks, had it out a couple more time this weekend at it is a blast. Lots of great comments from the folks who see it at the dock, they can't believe I built it, sure makes a guy feel good.

Cranky Badger
Skiff handled just fine with only me in it. I didn't have any extra weight up front or anything. I went 21 mph on gps but didn't want to push it any faster with the old motor. Ran and handled great at 15 mph was what I think is the sweet spot for my trim set up. If you want a little more weight forward you can buy a tiller extension for about 25 buck and if you layout the thwarts right you would be able to sit on the rear one and steer the skiff. Or do as Warren suggested and make one to suit out of PVC pipe. If you build one you will have a blast.

In the one I built back in 1968 I put three Teenaged boys in it and told them to sink it.
They succeeded in flipping it, but could not sink anything but the Motor end.

So test it now in the warm weather before you go fishing in it. 8)

Thanks for your impressions Wardy.

As far as the thwarts/seats go, in the past I've run 1X2 along the inside of the gunwhale to allow me to slide the seats fore and aft to get the best location. What do you figure it would do to the trim on your boat if a 240lb guy sat beside the motor rather than ahead of it ? I know the flat bottom gives you lots of flotation back there, but...
And I've already got the PVC tiller extension cut out ! Lol.
I guess the next step is to get some plans on the way.

Once I get the trailer and the rowboat done, it'll be great to build one for myself.
Despite having the forms done and the ply on hand, the rowing dory will just have to wait - it's a crime to have that old but well-kept o/b parked on the stand down in the basement !

Again, nice job on your build. I'll be happy if mine looks half that good. Any guesses as to the weight ?

Wardy,

Just an excellent job, very slick looking boat you have there, and that engine just shines!
