The Official launch of "Tossin & Turnin"
Well, my Malahini has officially been launched and given some water time at Lake of the Ozarks. We launched last weekend on the morning of June 24. The boat was christened: "Tossin & Turnin" after an oldies song our group likes to dance to at our kids weddings. It also is appropriate for a 16' runabout on Lake of the Ozarks, which can have a lot of waves, so the boat is always tossing and turning.
My son Kevin surprised me by flying in from Seattle to help with the launch. I did not know he was coming, so it was a very pleasant surprise. My daughter Leah also attended as well as the Admiral. Some friends who also have a boat at the lake were there to accompany my family on our trip to the dock from the ramp. Here we are at Lake of the Ozarks state park, boat ramp #1, ready for the christening. Here is that cast of thousands that attended the ceremony.
Here is the launch video, with accompanying music by Bobby Lewis.

And finally, here it is at its resting spot on the lift at our dock. The boat runs well and planes easily. My 1975 65hp Mercury gets it to about 35 at 5200RPM. I guess it is due to being a wooden boat, but it sometimes sounds like a drum when going over small chop. It also gets you pretty wet when you hit a wave at speed. My theory is that a plywood hull, since it can't be concave at the front, shoots the water up and then you drive through it, getting a shower.
I also think I have another interested builder. He was looking it over and said he wants to build a boat when he retires. I'll get him to the forum and then he will be hooked.
Thanks to all the support and information this forum provides. Looking forward to G6.

Thanks. It was really a shock when Kevin showed up. Everyone else knew he was coming except me. He is a mechanical engineer that deals with robotic systems to help build airplanes. I've got him working on building a remote control for our boat lift.
I'm the chef in the house, so if anyone cooks at G6 it would be me. However, I'm waiting for Roberta's brats.

I told my wife we needed a three-car garage for my projects...she told me to ask her for permission next time before I buy a house.

Hey, looks GREAT!! I can only hope my Malahini turns out as well...
As far as the spray goes, it doesn't look like you put a spray rail on the outside along the chine...on my Sea Knight, I have a spray rail that runs about 3/4 of the way to the bow...(planned to run it all the way but I made them too thick and they broke on both sides!). Anyway, when running the Sea Knight in waves, water will run right up the side of the hull to almost the decking up forward where there is no spray rail, and where there IS the rail, the water sprays out to the side and doesn't come close to getting me wet (even considering the change in hull shape...the rail keeps the water from being held to the hull). I think in some of the Gathering video you can see it. If the spray becomes bothersome, you might consider putting one on. Not sure what other Malahini builders have experienced with/without them on that design.
Great work on your boat, it is a beauty! I sure hope you will be at G6 with it...

Congratulations Bob, it looks great. I did not install spray rails either and we do get wet when the chop comes up. I had the wood to make them too. I don't know what ever happened to that wood

T&T sounds about right. I totally get the 'drum' sound on the plywood hull. The first few times you hear it kind makes you wonder if you used enough epoxy to hold everything together
I had my 2nd launch a few days ago and pulled 2 kids on a tube... lots of fun, and trust me I hit some big waves and the boat is solid as can be.

Re: The Official launch of "Tossin & Turnin"
Thanks, all. It has been a blast getting T&T out on the water. Evening cruises are great when the waves are down. Thanks, Bob, on the spray rail idea. I'll have to do a little more research on that and maybe some other Malahini owners have put one on. G6 sounds a good time to work out the details.
Re: The Official launch of "Tossin & Turnin"
Oh wow! that is an amazing boat, your time and efforts definately show through. Looks like you had an amazing day at the launch too!! Congrats!
It's amazing what one can accomplish when he doesn't know what can't be accomplished.
