I just purchased a 93 mercury 25 with electric start, on the wiring harness it has 2 wires (1 Red, 1 Yellow) that do not lead anywhere and they are not cut. they are coming of off where the ignition key is, are these extra power wires for gauges and radio?
Thanks, John

yellow/red wires taht ran from remote control to ignition switch were for start in gear protection... but it has been awhile

These wires are actually coming from the ignition switch.

they do and connect to your control unit neutral safety switch leads. it prevents you from having the control in F or R and starting the motor
(but you may want to check with your Merc dealer just to be sure as it has been a few years since i hooked one up)

Hi John,

I don't know if any of these will work for your year. If not you might be able to contact them and ask.

There shouldn't be a straight yellow in an 8-pin merc harness?!?!?!?!

It sounds like an older control set. 7 or 8 pins in the connector?

The harness has 7 pins in it, where the wires come out of the key ignition is where I see a solid red wire that looks to be spliced into a purple wire, and a yellow wire that is spliced into a black wire? Both the Red and Yellow wire come out of the back of the key and run nowhere, they are only about 2 feet long?
Also while we are talking wires would it be possible to cut the7 pin plug off the wire
so I can feed it through the hole in my motor well then re-splice the wires back together?
The hole in my motor well is as big as I can get it.
Thanks for the help!! John

On the back of the Key: Red should be an ignition hot wire, yellow is (-)

Purple is typically a switched hot wire or ignition wire

Ok I think I got it. I hooked a tester I found and it is hot with the key turned on. Can I just hook these up to a bus bar and hook my stereo and lights to it?(with a switch)

Typically the switched circuit is 5 amps max so you could add a relay to carry a larger load.
