After 4yrs I have a problem

Postby jeffh » Sat Aug 01, 2015 9:25 am

Our lake gets rough on weekends and the Malahini is not so fun on that water. Now, after 4yrs, I have an electrical problem. Something has been beaten loose by the rough water. It all started a couple of weeks ago and I have been under my front deck and checked every fuse and ground. But, my radio, nav lights, interior lights, horn and blower will not work. The bilge pumps do work and they are on the same panel (strange). The tachometer is working which kinda makes sense. I think the fuel guage may not be working either, I need to ride around a little more to see if it moves.

Could there be a wire from a speaker or God forbid the bow light that has come loose and is touching something else causing a short? I also checked back by the battery and could find nothing loose. When I used a circuit checker every connection was good, but I have to assume that is just faulty information since the accessories connected to those circuits have stopped working. Perhaps I should disconnect every wire at the panel and reconnect one by one to see if I get results...???

The boat runs fine but I need to carry an airhorn and can't be out when lights are required. I wold have to remove a bulkhead to get to the bow light and fuel tank. To get to interior lights and speakers would require removing the seats so I could remove side panels :(

We have a covered floating dock and the boat is on a lift with a cover. I have not had it out of the water since the day she went in. She sits high and dry on the floating lift. Even the single digit temps in the mountains have not been a problem. It has started every season the first turn of the key just as Evinrude advertises. The E-tec engine is due for it's 3yr service, so I'll have to remove her next month to do that. The tilt/trim needs service too . So, I may just have the engine removed and take the boat home for an electrical shakedown...unless someone has a little "spark" or "light bulb" above their head. Yeah, those are obviously intended puns.

 If you have checked each one for 12 volt power and have that;how is the wire back for grounding on those?Didn't put in-line fuses somewhere and forget?

No, I don't think I have an in-line fuse. The weird thing is the two bilge pumps work. They each have an on/off switch on the dash just like the lights and the horn button. Nothing else on that panel is working...it's just baffling. I think I need to completely disconnect every wire on that panel and start reconnecting one at a time. I'm going to try simple things like connecting the horn where one of the bilge pumps is connected and see what happens.

Check your switches with a multimeter. It's possible they have gone bad. Not sure what kind you are using. You can also check your fuse panel for continuity with known good fuses installed. Disconnect your battery first. If your good at the switch and at the panel then you may have a problem in the wires somewhere. I would think if you had a short you would be blowing fuses. Maybe a wire got chaffed somewhere.

Jeff

Do you have multiple ground blocks? I have 3 in the Tahoe. I could be a ground wire to one block.

you stated :
"But, my radio, nav lights, interior lights, horn and blower will not work. The bilge pumps do work and they are on the same panel (strange)."

Are these things on a daisy chain arrangement as far as power?? ground??

What is 'common' among these things? Can it be 'common' power? Common ground?
Common fault?
Common 'works as advertised'??

 What kind of wire did you use. hardware store variety or Marine.I've used ordinary wire for bilge pumps and got corrosion from moisture getting under insulation. There is a teleseminar from Glen-l on wiring-maybe something on that.

Hello Everyone, thanks for all the replies. I have only one block and some things do share a common connection. The wire I used was all 12 gauge marine wire. I think I need to disconnect everything and start by reconnecting at the bilge connections to see if they work then. Since both bilge pumps have separate switches and they work, I will at least know if the horn and lights work. Then, maybe, I can find my problem.

now that is a good question!!! I have done absolutely nothing! My wife and I went back up to the lake Fri-Mon and and did not even go out on the boat. I'll have to work on it next time I go up.
