Anybody have any tips/ideas on how to seal/minimize staple holes in cedar?

staple/nail holes will show in cedar because you tear the wood fiber. i use just a brad nailer and line them up neatly ..adds character and shows process.
no need to fill as the epoxy will do that and create a nice contrasting darker dot.
if you want no nails or staple holes visible, clamping cedar into position woks well. see some of the kayak building sites and their clamping jigs

Don't put them there to begin with.

But if you have to, then Billy is wise with his statements. The staple holes in the cedar decks of my kayak are very evident.

Thanks Guys,

Billy,

I plan on using brads when I strip the sides. I just finished putting strips on the transom to cover the ply. I'm building this from scrap material and givin the fact that I'm building it  , she will have plenty of character.

Dave,

I'm glad to see you haven't lost your sense of humor. :D But your advice is too late.  :P

maybe put on a wash coat of epoxy to seal the cedar, then tint the next coat to closer match the staple holes?

The plans for the boat mentioned applying strips to the floor after the ribs are installed. Not wanting to cut and fit pieces between the ribs we put the strips on first. And this time I don't have to worry about staple holes, we marked off where the ribs go and put our staples there. :D I then decided to glass the floor now too. Here is a picture after wetout.

A bit late perhaps, but I'll chime in anyway for future reference. One thing that will make a HUGE impact on staple holes is to take a rag and some steaming hot water and wipe down the cedar. The steamy hot water will swell the wood a bit and cause the holes to swell shut pretty good. You can still see them if you look close, but they are not nearly as visible as they are without stemaing them ;)

Started applying the strips to the sides tonight. The exterior is going to take quite a bit of sanding. Thankfully, I have a lot of practice.

The hull has been stripped and the sanding has begun. :D The first two deck strips were installed tonight. While this has been a fun little project, it has also been a great learning experience.
