Hey all,

Looking through one of the materials lists on the site I see callouts for all of the lumber sizes needed to complete the boat. Are these callouts true sizes or nominal: i.e. I see a keel requirement listed as a 1"x4"x12". Just wondering on how it is labeled so I can be sure what I am ordering when the time comes.

John

Yes, this is an important point. It has been discussed many times here but it always bears out repeating. When your plans call for 1", that dimension needs to be EXACTLY 1" or 4 quarters actual thickness. Boats are NOT built the same way that houses are built using material from the big box stores or the local lumber yard. If you haven't already found this out, hardwood suppliers think in terms of the number of 1/4 inches per dimension just so that this confusion is avoided. Ergo, a 1x4x12 is going to be 4 quarters by 16 quarters by 48 quarters.

Got it?

After reading the Malahini BOM notes it stated that unless stated as NET it is finished size (1" is actually 3/4"), but width is NET, meaning 4" is 4". I guess that is why you read the notes uh :0)

yes and read/study plans and notes as you sit in your chair with beverage in hand. so much info that gets overlooked or does not quite connect until you commit to that portion of the build.
...and we are here looking on so questions with pictures attached are always welcome

I used to think that lumber specified in 4ths was always "net" but got a suprise at Home Depot this past summer. Treated decking specified as 5/4ths was actually 1". I rectified this situation by purchasing at Menards where 5/4ths was 1 1/4" and the cost was 50% less.
