I am confused over bom I can get all timber in meranti dressed all round at no real extra cost compared to rough sawn does this mean I order for frames 3/4 " x width and all other eg batens ,chine ,shear 25% less than nominated size
have searched for clarity on plans and schedule but still confused
any help on bom for riviera would be great

Hello Jenko - ask away

Nominal size - look in your booklet. I believe it is detailed about lumber thickness on the page with the BOM

Nominal size is essentially the dressed dimension. A 1" rough cut board that is dressed will yield approximately 3/4" nominal finished thickness. That will do just fine.

dave check this site
http://ramienstimber.com.au/catalogue/m ... niturethey list nominal size and finished sizebeing that nominal at 19x 19 is $ 1.75 per lm versus 19x19 dar $1.95per lm cost
I think cost v time cheaper to by dressed timber and if I go the 3/4 rule is that ok as no mater how hard i look it still is not made absolutely clear on bom

Now that is interesting. We have to watch words.

In your neck of the woods it appears nominal is what we call rough cut. That would be a true 1" (25mm) thick piece vs the finished (dressed) at 3/4" (19mm).

So your nominal is at 1.75/lm vs 1.95/lm for finished. Nominal is thicker. It is cheaper because of the savings on labor to finish it. But the cost difference is not that much. Before you make a decision, where are you using this material

glad you said that at this stage am only looking at the frame and transom material although it also concerns keel chine sheer and battens
was going to use oregon as stringers as I gather this is what you call douglass fir

Jenko,

I will also be using Meranti for my frames, battens, keel,etc... (Was going to be hoop pine but the guy sold all of his stock he had.. so i missed out..).
Just be carefull when choosing the Meranti that you stay clear of the extra light timber that is like Balsa wood and the very heavy as it has a habit of warping... meranti will be fine to use as it has good straight grain is a very clear timber (No defects) and it will be epoxy covered anyway.....
Dave is correct Nominal is rough sawn and dressed is the net finished size..
Have you thought of using LVL beams for the stringers? Just a thought as i will be using them for my build, another builder Tim Major has used them on his Monaco in Sydney.. check out his photos in the customer photos....

Jenko,

Go with 19mm Dar (Dressed) this will be the correct size for your frames, you should be also able to use the 19mm foe the battens, keel etc.

Glue used in the LVL beams are all A bond glue, of what i have reseached is that if it is made in Australia it will be A bond glue used in the bonding this also goes with the plywood as well.
