Hi all:

I'm starting on my Ture Grit hull build and I noticed that douglas fir (DG) is preferred for the frames. Does anyon know if the frames can be built with any other wood type other than DG as I am having difficulty finding good clear vertical grain DG ?

Many thanks...JB

I see no problem with any alternative woods. Tell us what you have found in your searching of any and all local sources, which would be the best place to begin. This allows you to hand pick and you don't have to deal with shipping issues for starters.

Mahogany, White Oak and Southern Yellow Pine are often used for frames, shear and chine.

I'm buying select # 1 cypress for 2.30 to 2.60 BF out of Memphes. it comes in 1" 5/4,, 6/4s, 8/4s rough sawn so you have to mill it or sand it smooth. It does not rot and is as strong as D.F. It has straight grain
I will come back with a link. http://www.connectedlines.com/wood/wood22.htm

I found Sapele for a lot less than Mahogany, it is good stuff, as good as mahogany.
Ash would be good for frames too.

I made mine from Southern Yellow Pine. Personally, if the intent of the boat is to be trailered and stored on the dry I would be more open to various types of wood as long as it were reasonably suitable and of good quality. But if the boat is going to remain on the water 24/7 I would certainly want a species with higher rot resistance.
