As I work my way through the plywood portion of my build, I've noticed a number of thin white threads (similar to dental floss), which appear to be nylon or a similar material, embedded in the Hydrotek ply. They run linearly and seem to be an intential part of the structure.

Anyone heard of this? Is this common in plywood?

HMMMM. I used Hydrotek in several places on Midnight and don't recall seeing this. I wonder if it is new

The hydrotec I purchased recently has a FUJI stamp on it. Besides being difficult to cut without getting a lot of tear out and splinters, it was difficult to finish on the Super Spartan. The Okoume I used on the bottom was easily encapsulated with the epoxy resin, flowed out nice and had a smooth glass like finish after two coats. The hydrotec I got has a deep graininess that required 4 coats, then sanded back to near wood, recoated 3 more times before I was able to get the majority of the grainy crack-like fissures out of the surface. You could not give hydrotec to me. Never again. It is very pretty with great color, but what a PITA. Maybe a filler stain would have helped, but I had no intentions of staining. I wanted to leave the wood natural like I did with the Okoume. Way too much extra work for me.

I was going to buy Meranti, which is Hydrotek for my SUP. I guess I'll stick with Okoume.

Dang Roberta..., now ya got me thinking about primer and paint for the whole job. :(

It does splinter a lot, and if you recall, I had wieght issues with sheets raging in wieght from 20-40lbs each.

It came highly recommended. hmmm...

If you don't mind the extra work and care, the hydrotec might be worth the price difference. Had I known the surface would be so grainy, I might have considered a filler of some sort prior to encapsulating. I just blindly treated it as if it would react like the Okoume did. I went with just straight epoxy. Maybe some of the more experienced builders can chime in with some of their techniques of bright finishing hydrotec that might be easier than what I went through. Again, the wood is very pretty, just a PITA. at least for me. I'm trying to relay my (in)experience so other builders new to this hobby can be forewarned of potential problems.
