I am getting ready to apply 3/8 okume plywood decking to my Malahini, to be covered by mahogany planks later. I'm wondering if I should trim the plywood back shy of the edge, allowing me to glue a strip of mahogany over it later to match the mahogany wood on top. I know that folks sometimes use a rub strip to hide the plywood edge, but I was thinking that it would be nice to have solid mahogany at the edge to shape to the final contour. Any opinions on this?

I ran a router along the edge and made solid mahogany strips to glue in place just as you suggest. It gives a nice looking and finished appearance.

On the KH boats the sub deck is cut back a good bit. Then the cover boards are routed to lap over it.

wbbaer, I'm assuming you used a bearing on the router bit to follow the hull shape. How much did you recess the plywood?

A90 degree outside corner cap also looks nice and will cover the edge ply

I routed a 3/4 deep edge into my sheer to accept a solid piece of mahogany to trim out the deck. The veneer was laid on top of this. I used a batten for a guide mounted to the deck.

Great stuff! Several good ideas here. I was thinking that the profile of the edge would look something like this. If this is true, then at the bow the "insert" would need to be wide enough to be finished as shown.

OK, I decided to band a 3/8" by 3/8" strip of mahogany to the edge of the plywood deck which I cut back to be 1/8 smaller than the hull. Here is a picture of the glue up assembly I did today, we'll see how this works out.

(for some reason these pictures appear rotated 180 degrees when I posted them...)
