i am going to build a wooden boat used for crabbing, fishing, and what not. it is going to be 20 to 30 feet probably. my dad said just use 1/2" play wood. um what do yall think i should use and if i do use 1/2" ply wood what do i paint it with to keep it from rooting

Most of our boats are coated in epoxy resin and fiberglass cloth then painted or varnished for UV protection.

For a crabbing boat keep it simple and use a good oil paint. Check out Harold Payson's books or even Buehler's Backyard Boatbuilding. Alot of great advice on keeping it simple for workboats. To prevent rotting fiberglassing the outside of hull and encapsulating the interior is just good practice.
