Hi there,

I'm about to start my riviera project and have found a good source of Queensland Hoop Pine in Australia. It is listed as a boat building timber. Here is a link to the technical data --> http://www.daff.qld.gov.au/26_6832.htm .

My question is, is this ok to use for framing on this type of boat?

Thank you

Hi Al, I have decided I will use hoop for my frames and battons, but yet to decide if I'll leave it natural or stain it a little to a similar shade as the mahogany. It is a reasonably light tiimber, comparable density to mahogany also.

Hoop pine is a beautiful timber to work with and there is some good plantation grown timber about. For the Monaco it cost me $1000 for the frame timber. I got clear grade up to 6.1 M lengths. For the planking I used 4mm structural hoop pine ply. It is F14 rated and as all three laminates are the same thickness it is perfect for diagonal planking. It not cheap at around $54 a sheet but is a lot better than a lot of marine grades I came across. There is a marine grade hoop ply of course but at over $80 a sheet the only difference I see is that it's AA instead of BB as in the case of the structural grade. See "Monaco in Queensland" in "Customer Photos"

Thank you all for your comments and advice. I am now waiting for my timber yard to reply with a quote and it's nt the job. Ozzieboat - tanks also for comments on the ply. When I get further into this, I'm sure I'll have more questions.

Hi Mate good to see another person committed to Slavery (Boat)

In regards to your question Moranty is also suitable for boats have used it on 2 boats already and on my current project.
I also found Big River Timbers to be good for Plywood prices.

Thanks Bernie. I started the frames last weekend. I've cut the transom and frames 1 and 2, so a long way to go. More to be done this weekend.

Thanks
