Have just finished first layer of ply with 6mm bottom (which actualy measured at 6.7mm)and 4mm on sides (which actually measures at 4.3mm)
Do I go for 2 or 1 more layer of ply plus my final veneer layer of 3 mm mahogany
bottom 6.7 + 4.3 + 4.3 + 3 = 18.3mm or the 15.3mm
sides4.3 + 4.3 + 4.3 + 3 = 15.9mm or 11.6mm
plans call for 5/8" bottom (15.875 mm)
and 1/2" sides (12.7mm)
I have already bought the ply so it is not a cost issue , more a weight issue,.
will I loose 1mm on each layer by sanding ?

1mm is a lot to sand off that area so I very much doubt you will sand all that off except in small areas. Unless you are looking at competition speed boating, I'd go with the extra thickness. It might be an extra few pounds (kilos to us) but the security of pounding the waves with a little extra thickness is quite reassuring to me :)

Yes, stay with the 4 layers. I have 3/4" on my bottom AND sides and the boat is still light

Weight can be an issue but not with the Riviera with the high performance engines we have been installing. We need weight!!!!

I have three laminations of 4 mm Hydrotek and one 1/8" mahogany veneer on the sides and the bottom. When I cut the various holes for water intake and rudder port the plugs measured about 3/4". The wood thickness adds up to 15 mm, about 5/8", but the epoxy adds a little at each layer. I echo Dave's opinion.
