Can't find 1/4" marine plywood!!
I'm gathering my materials for my Squirt. Nobody, I mean Nobody around me carries or can get 1/4" marine plywood. Are there any suggestions for an alternative? I'm planning on encapsulating and fiber glassing. This boat will not sit in the water, it will be store in my shop. Please Help! Thanks!

I'm ordering mine from here http://marine-plywood.us/ I do have a local source but even with shipping it was much cheaper.

You are looking at places other than big box stores, right? A quick google search turned up these folks near you.

do not use the 5.2 mm stuff from lowes for anything you intend to put a gas motor bigger than 2 hp on it will not with stand the stress just my opinion i also think it will break when you try to bend it at the transom

This place cost more to ship than the price of the wood!

You could use the 5.2mm and put on a couple layers of fibreglass to add some thickness and strength.
By the time I have built a boat, I'll be ready to build a boat....

The timber products here can't get marine. I have no idea where to get it! I've checked everywhere in a 60 mile radius and the online places want more for shipping than the lumber!vupilot wrote:You are looking at places other than big box stores, right? Thats my thought!Trackhappy wrote:You could use the 5.2mm and put on a couple layers of fibreglass to add some thickness and strength.

Encapsulate it with a couple layers and it will be fine.

Scott again.

I think once you add in the cost of the extra fiberglass and epoxy, you'll be right back at the marine ply cost (if not more).rocker wrote:Thats my thought!Trackhappy wrote:You could use the 5.2mm and put on a couple layers of fibreglass to add some thickness and strength. It's $14.00 a sheet versus $55.00. Hardwood and waterproof glue.

Besides, the key with the marine plywood is the lack of voids in the core layers. Who knows what you're getting with the cheap stuff.

If you need more check with your local "real" lumber yard that sells to high end custom builders. They probably have some or an get it ... assuming you are talking about douglas fir. Good luck
If you build it ...they will come.
