Malahini board feet of lumber calculation

Post by ashespap » Thu Jun 20, 2013 12:26 pm

Sold a motor home and now I can get started on my Malahini.
Anyhow, I calculated roughly 100 bd ft of lumber. Can anyone tell me if I calculated correctly? Also, should I add 20% to this when buying the lumber or more/less? Thank you!

I do not know how much would be required for the Malahini, but always buy more than you think you'll need, even after an allowance of 20%. That would allow you to better match boards, grain orientation, etc.. I bought 225 bf of WO when I needed less than 100 bf, but it allowed me be very picky about which boards to use in places where it was to be finished bright.

You'll find other uses of the leftovers. The leftover WO is becoming furniture for the house, a couple sea chests and some toolboxes. As the sawmill is 45 miles from me, it would have really been a bummer to have to go back for 1 or 2 more boards.
