Does anyone know of or heard of any strange properties of Spanish Cedar when it reaches high temperatures of about 120 F. When it gets hot does it produce some sort of gas or oil which attacks epoxy?

I just did a search on it and it says its very high in resin and is used for making of humadores it does not take oil finishes well unless you let to dry out well but they are saying to use polyurthane to finish it from what I read it is also used in the making of musical insterments. the resin could be what is causing the effect you talked about

I think after WW II Chris Craft used Spanish Cedar. These here the ones they painted white. It did not take a finish well.

Thanks for the replys. The problem I am having is with glue. I glued a 3/4 Gaboon ply to a board of Spanish Cedar and left it in the garage over winter. Was fine until I put it in the boat and now that the really hot weather is on it and the glue line has separated. I took a notch out and both sides have glue on them but they are no longer bonded together. Two weeks ago I was notching the same board and had to chisel to clean the wood apart. Now it just falls away. I've seen this before and changed the brand of epoxy I was using. I can not understand it because the wood should pull away first. The glue should stay with one or the other but this is not the case, the glue laminates on both sides and just splits away. I used Cabosil on the bond and a light clamp pressure with lots of glue forming a bead on the seam. Looking at the seam, it has a crack running the full length which was not there a few weeks ago. The same thing happened with Mahogany to Spanish Cedar. I coated some of the Spanish Cedar with epoxy last year and it seems ok. Its only when the Spanish Cedar is bonded to form a joint that this happens. What can be doing this? When looking at the torn seam it appears as if it was shear stress but Spanish Cedar is a soft wood, the epoxy should have pulled the wood away not split. It's beyond me what's doing this but it has something to do with high tempertures around 120 F and above.
