Ok, if I bring a Mercury 20HP outboard to the Gathering that has been sitting up for about 10 years, who will show me how to rebuild it? I know NOTHING about outboard engines.

You knew nothing about building a boat and that doesn't seem to have bothered or hurt you any, if you can build a boat you can rebuild an outboard engine, in fact it's probably easier because all the parts are already there!

Does it really need to be rebuilt? I got some old motors that still fine even at their age.
Perhaps the carburator got some gummy crap in it, maybe that is all.

Heck, I don't know. I was going to clean it up, bring it and let us all take a look and see.

dave...what year is the motor? I have an owners manual for a merc 20 hp from the mid-70's. Let me know if you want it (i'm not sure what year yours is).

that would be about right. It is a Merc 200 early 70's model. Sitting on a aluminum rig down at my dock for the last decade unused. The developer bought a bunch of rigs to register for each slip so he could put the dock in. Per COE rules each slip must have a registered boat.

So this looks like the best motor down there and want to get it running to put on another rig so I can have something to tool around in fishing.

Dave, I have the SELOC manual for 2-40 hp, 1 and 2 cyl 2-stroke models 1965-89. Let me know if I can look anything up for you. I have learned a fair amount working on my 74' 40hp this year. First thing I would do is pull the plugs and check the compression.

You can check the serial number on the motor and type that in a search online and it will give you the year of the motor.

If you would, bring that merc manual, I'd like to take a look at it.
