River Run

Postby Roberta » Sat Sep 01, 2012 1:17 pm

Rich and I will be too late to do a river run on Thursday to Chattanooga. Anyone interested in going on Friday for lunch?

Great!!! We'll see who's all up to it for Friday. Seem's a good thing to do since Saturday will be the big spectator day and the videos of the boats for Glen L's website. I know most people will be coming in on Thursday or later. We always seem to be there too late for the Thursday run. This should be fun!!!

I'm sure we can work out passengers. We can probably add 1 or 2 depending on size. If I add too much weight aft the ride can get very rough in our Zip.

How about a run to the bat cave weds and thurs evening? I read that the reason we may not have seen any in 2010 when we cruised down there was because they had already migrated south for winter which they begin doing in mid september. Since the Gathering dates are so early this year we stand a much better chance of seeing some of the half a million bats come out around sunset.

That would be cool!!! We'd be in for Thursday nite. We should be at the marina about 2:30pm

How far is the bat cave and how far is the run to Chattanooga? Haven't done either. Where have you all stopped for lunch in Chattanooga in the past. I understand there are docks to tie up. Is there fuel nearby? I am bringing my spare 6 gallon tank. I have 14 gallons in the main. Not sure what the fuel burn is on my old Merc 500. Probably will cruise at about 4500 rpm and 25-28 mph.

The trick is that the bats don't come out till right at dark. The channel is tricky at night. The Cave is near the dam, off to the south under a bridge and at the far end of a lagoon.

I'd like to make the run, but I am coming in on Friday. What time do you plan on leaving?
I can adjust my departure time, within reason. I believe I have a 6 hour drive from St. Louis.

I'm thinking we would need to leave about 10:00 to 11:00am at the latest to do lunch and get back to HB to set up for the dock supper. Bob, I think you will have all of 6 hrs and maybe a lot more pulling a boat.. Google maps has it about 7 hrs from St. Louis.

10 or 11 am is too late.
Need to shove off about 9
Lunch is at the Big River Grill downtown Chattenooggaa.
Yes there is fuel dock just down from the public dock.
Public dock is great for stopping in Downtown for lunch, a short 2 block walk to the restaurant.
I think it is a 35 mile run each way.

Thanks, Ken. I was thinking at least 1 1/2 hrs each way at about 25 mph. I don't know the route and it may be slower and if we have slower boats it will be longer. What is a realistic time each way? Are any areas speed inhibiting? If if anyone has trouble, it could be longer. I have a portable GPS with inland lakes and rivers on it. I will be bringing that along. I got lost on the San Juan arm of the Colorado. Don't want to do that .
