My "Boatbuilding With Plywood" book says that i should use plastic film between my scarf joint and my workbench when i am epoxying them together (obviously..to keep from bonding my keel to my workbench). My question is: What kind of "plastic film" should i be using? Where do i buy it. (I know that one time i used an ordinary plastic cup to mix epoxy when i was out of my good ones and the heated epoxy melted the cup).

Any advice helps!!

I think almost any plastic works. Epoxy does not like to stick to any plastics that I have seen. I have some meant for taping off during painting and it works fine.

You will not have the same heat build up when the epoxy is spread out.

Darth,
I have used kitchen plastic wrap and heavy rolled plastic and haven't had a problem with either. As Jeremy mentioned epoxy doesn't get as hot once spread out. Just don't use anything with color or print. :( Don't ask me why.

Wax Paper seems to work fine for me.

Epoxy does stick to _SOME_ plastics.

Do a test first.

Also, check both sides of the plastic.

Otherwise you may find yourself sanding plastic off about half the pieces.

Darth,

I picked up a roll of 6 mil plastic sheeting from Lowes. It works well. You can also use it to mask off areas during painting, as a drop cloth during fiberglass, and as the ultimate trip hazard just to add to the fun.
