 Post subject: epoxy shelf life

Back in October I was fiberglassing my boat with the epoxy cover kit I got from Glen-l. The weather started to turn chilly and sanding even after a couple of days just seemed to gum up so I decided to stop until I got some warmer weather.

The past couple of weeks have been warm so I decided to dive in again. I a applying the flow coats. The only thing is my "A" resin was wierd. It was like it started to crystalize, kinda like honey that sat around for a year or so. I brought the resin in doors thinking it still might be cold and stored it at 70+ for over a week. Today I tried to work with it but I could not, still lumpy and thick.

I have some other resin from West Marine "105" that seems to be ok. Is there a short shelf life to Epoxy Shield? Or is it still good? It sure doesn't seem to be good.

huck..

Try sitting the can in a warm water bath for a few hours. It should get rid of your crystals/clumps.

About longevity: I am currently using Glen L's stuff, but I started the project with some left over West System epoxy that I have had sitting around for 12 years or so with the measuring pumps on them. Stuff worked great.

Those lumps sometimes take time to get rid of! I had to stir my west systems resin for ages while heating it gently on the outside with a heatgun (not recommended!!) The lumps were clogging up my pumps.

I want to build another Kid Row next summer, and I have epoxy left over from last summer's Kid Row. I'll find out how robust the stuff is after spending the frozen Wisconsin winter out in the garage!
