I just finished reading the post regarding a crisp edge @ the Transom. Learned a lot. Now I am wondering how much I should fair the knife edge I have sanded at the stem and cut water area. I was planning on cutting an appropriate sized dowel in half and then attaching it to a flattened stem. My reasoning here is to achieve the proper radius so glass cloth with find purchase on the wood surface. I was going to use a 3/4 inch dowel, but after reading the earlier post I am thinking much smaller. What think you? For those of you who have gone before us we really aprreciate your sharing.

I used a radius about the size of a pencil, maybe a little bigger on the stem

You could flatten and cut a dowel and glue in place, but that would be hard to clamp and it's a lot of work.

I just used my sander and rounded over back and forth to achieve the radius....keep it moving and will go quickly

I used a D/A air sander, but a R/O,or finish sander with say 80 grit paper will do the trick

Actually you can do it by hand sanding too without much problem

I'm with Warren. I sanded the plywood to a radius and just went along with it.

Well, I actually cut my back flat and then applied a nose piece which I faired back down to match the hull sides. The leading edge of this piece is not even as round as a pencil. Remember this is also going behind the cutwater so the size of the edge for the finish is less critical.

I find that making a custom scraper out of 1/8" steel plate works for me. I drill a hole ( say 3/4") and cut it in half or as needed to fit the work. It also acts as a gage. To get rid of a lot of wood I used an old fashioned rasp. There is no set up, or new sandpaper needed and it cleans up easily. After I scrape it, I sand with increasing grit sandpaper to suit, if needed.
